RESUMEN

Slow dissolution/hydrolysis of insoluble/macromolecular organics and poor sludge filterability restrict the application potential of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Bubble-free membrane microaeration was firstly proposed to overcome these obstacles in this study. The batch anaerobic digestion tests feeding insoluble starch and soluble peptone with and without microaeration showed that microaeration led to a 65.7-144.8% increase in methane production and increased critical flux of microfiltration membrane via driving the formation of large sludge flocs and the resultant improvement of sludge settleability. The metagenomic and bioinformatic analyses showed that microaeration significantly enriched the functional genes and bacteria for polysaccharide and protein hydrolysis, microaeration showed little negative effects on the functional genes involved in anaerobic metabolisms, and substrate transfer from starch to peptone significantly affected the functional genes and microbial community. This study demonstrates the dual synergism of microaeration to enhance the dissolution/hydrolysis/acidification of insoluble/macromolecular organics and sludge filterability for AnMBR application.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the protective effect and mechanism of hydroxyl safflower yellow A (HSYA) from myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). METHODS: HUVECs were treated with oxygen-glucose deprivation reperfusion (OGD/R) to simulate the ischemia reperfusion model, and cell counting kit-8 was used to detect the protective effect of different concentrations (1.25-160 µ mol/L) of HSYA on HUVECs after OGD/R. HSYA 80 µ mol/L was used for follow-up experiments. The contents of inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-18, IL-1 ß, monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and IL-6 before and after administration were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The protein expressions of toll-like receptor, NOD-like receptor containing pyrin domain 3 (NLRP3), gasdermin D (GSDMD) and GSDMD-N-terminal domain (GSDMD-N) before and after administration were detected by Western blot. NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor cytokine release inhibitory drug 3 sodium salt (CRID3 sodium salt, also known as MCC950) and agonist were added, and the changes of NLRP3, cysteine-aspartic acid protease 1 (Caspase-1), GSDMD and GSDMD-N protein expressions were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: HSYA inhibited OGD/R-induced inflammation and significantly decreased the contents of inflammatory cytokines IL-18, IL-1 ß, MCP-1, TNF-α and IL-6 (P<0.01 or P<0.05). At the same time, by inhibiting NLRP3/Caspase-1/GSDMD pathway, HSYA can reduce the occurrence of pyroptosis after OGD/R and reduce the expression of NLRP3, Caspase-1, GSDMD and GSDMD-N proteins (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The protective effect of HSYA on HUVECs after OGD/R is related to down-regulating the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome and inhibiting pyroptosis.

RESUMEN

Glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, GLY) ranks among the most extensively used and effective herbicides globally. However, excessive GLY utilization poses a substantial threat to the survival of honey bees (Apis cerana). Here we monitored the survival status of A. cerana treated with GLY, and conducted transcriptome sequencing of the bee gut and head to further explore potential GLY influences at the molecular level. We observed that the mortality rate of bees increased as GLY concentration escalated. Pivotal pathways emerged in response to the GLY treatment, with a substantial number of differentially expressed genes enriched in the longevity regulating pathway - multiple species. This strongly suggested that GLY may influence the physiological behavior of bees by impacting this particular pathway. Moreover, our analysis revealed a notable reduction in the enzymatic activities of CYP450 and AChE in both the bee head and intestines of when exposed to GLY. Conversely, the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the head remained unaffected, whereas in the intestines, it exhibited a significant increase. Additionally, prophenol oxidase (PPO) and glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) displayed contrasting trends in enzymatic activity in both organs. This study offers valuable insights into how GLY impacted the survival of A. cerana.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) has been considered an alternative treatment to prevent embolic stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). However, it carries a risk of general anesthesia or esophageal injury if guided by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). AIMS: We aimed to investigate the feasibility and safety of minimal LAAO (MLAAO) using Watchman under fluoroscopy guidance alone in patients with NVAF. METHODS: A total of 249 consecutive patients with NVAF who underwent LAAO using the WATCHMAN device were divided into two groups: the Standard LAAO (SLAAO) group and the MLAAO group. Procedural characteristics and follow-up results were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in the rate of successful device implantation (p > 0.05). Fluoroscopy time, radiation exposure dose, and contrast medium usage in the MLAAO group were higher than those in the SLAAO group (p < 0.001). The procedure time and hospitalization duration were significantly lower in the MLAAO group than those in the SLAAO group (p < 0.001). The occluder compression ratio, measured with fluoroscopy, was lower than that measured with TEE (17.63 ± 3.75% vs. 21.69 ± 4.26%, p < 0.001). Significant differences were observed between the SLAAO group and the MLAAO group (p < 0.05) in terms of oropharyngeal/esophageal injury, hypotension, and dysphagia. At 3 months after LAAO, the MLAAO group had a higher incidence of residual flow within 1-5 mm compared to the SLAAO group, although the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: MLAAO guided by fluoroscopy, instead of TEE, without general anesthesia simplifies the operational process and may be considered safe, effective, and feasible, especially for individuals who are unable to tolerate or unwilling to undergo TEE or general anesthesia.

RESUMEN

This paper investigates the fault-tolerant prescribed performance control problem for a class of multiple-input single-output unknown nonlinear systems subject to process faults and actuator failures. In contrast to the related works, we consider a general class of nonlinear systems with both multiplicative nonlinearities and additive nonlinearities corrupted by the process faults; only the boundedness of the process faults and the continuity of the nonlinear functions are required, without the explicit or fixed structures of the fault functions. To conquer this problem, a less-demanding and low-complexity fault-tolerant prescribed performance control approach is proposed. The controller is independent of the specific information of faults or the system model and does not invoke fault diagnosis or neural/fuzzy approximation to acquire such knowledge. It achieves the reference tracking with the predefined rate and accuracy. A comparative simulation on a single-link robot is conducted to illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cardioprotection is valued in radiotherapy for patients with left-sided breast cancer. Deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) technique can achieve cardioprotection well. However, during DIBH, the extent to which the heart enters the radiation field is affected by the movement of the thorax and diaphragm. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between the maximum distance of the heart entering the field (maximum heart distance, MHD) and thoracic diameter changes and diaphragmatic descent in left-sided breast cancer patients during DIBH. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-eight patients with left-sided breast cancer were included in this retrospective study. They performed simulation in Sentinel-guided DIBH, and two sets of CT images were collected under both free breathing (FB) and DIBH, and diaphragm positions, anteroposterior thoracic diameter (ATD), transverse thoracic diameter (TTD), gating window level (GWL), and MHD were measured, and the change (Δ) of each parameter in DIBH relative to that in FB were calculated. Pearson or Spearman test were used to analyze the correlation between ΔMHD and the changes in other parameters. RESULTS: For all patients with DIBH, the average of ΔMHD was -8.3 mm, and the average of ΔATD and ΔTTD were 11.0 and 8.6 mm, and the median of both left diaphragmatic descent (LDD) and right diaphragmatic descent (RDD) were 35.0 mm, and the median of GWL was 11.1 mm. The correlation coefficients between MHD decrease (ΔMHD) and LDD, RDD, and ΔTTD were -0.430 (p = 0.000), -0.592 (p = 0.000) and 0.208 (p = 0.040), respectively, but not significantly correlated with ΔATD or GWL. CONCLUSIONS: The MHD decrease showed a moderate correlation with diaphragmatic descent In Sentinel-guided DIBH for patients with left-sided breast cancer, while there was a weak or no correlation with thoracic diameter changes or GWL. Abdominal breathing can lower diaphragm more and may be more beneficial to the heart stay away from tangential field.

RESUMEN

Following brain injury, neural stem cells (NSCs) can generate mature neurons and replace damaged cells. However, the capacity of endogenous NSCs to self-repair from injured brain is limited as most NSCs die before becoming mature neurons. Therefore, a boosting endogenous NSCs by pharmacological support offers the potential to repair the damaged brain. Recently, small molecules have hold considerable promise for neuron regeneration and repair as they can penetrate the blood-brain barrier easily. Senkyunolide I (SEI) is a bioactive constituent derived from traditional Chinese medicines Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. and Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, and was found to able to prevent ischemic stroke. This study examined the effects of SEI on the proliferation and neuronal lineage differentiation of prepared neural stem/progenitor cells (NS/PCs). The NS/PC proliferation was determined by 2-(4-iodophenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-(2,4-disulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium, monosodium salt, and neurosphere formation assays. The NS/PC differentiation was also investigated by immunocytochemistry, and western blotting was employed to measure phosphorylated Akt (pAkt) and GSK-3ß (pGSK-3ß), and active-ß-catenin protein levels. We showed that the NS/PC proliferation was enhanced after SEI exposure. Elevated cell numbers were also observed in neurospheres, which were incubated with SEI for 3 days, whereas the NS/PC differentiation was decreased after SEI exposure for 5 days. Furthermore, SEI upregulated pAkt/Akt and active-ß-catenin levels and increased NS/PC proliferation after SEI treatment was reversed by phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor LY294002. downregulated differentiated processes. Thus, SEI promoted the NS/PC proliferation and suppressed NS/PC differentiation into neurons and/or astrocytes, therefore SEI could be an interesting and promising candidate for stimulating NSCs.

RESUMEN

This paper investigates the asymptotic stability and synchronization of fractional-order (FO) memristive neural networks with time delays. Based on the FO comparison principle and inverse Laplace transform method, the novel sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of a FO nonlinear system are given. Then, based on the above conclusions, the sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability and synchronization of FO memristive neural networks with time delays are investigated. The results in this paper have a wider coverage of situations and are more practical than the previous related results. Finally, the validity of the results is checked by two examples.

RESUMEN

This study presents a novel method for producing acicular aragonite using argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) slag while controlling the reaction temperature, reaction time, stirring speed, and the magnesium-tocalcium stoichiometric ratio. This approach provides steel plants with an opportunity to decrease their CO2 emissions and promote efficient resource utilization and CO2 storage through the production of high-quality value-added products. The experimental results showed that reaction temperature was the most significant factor affecting the carbonation efficiency of AOD slag, followed by reaction time, stirring speed, CO2 partial pressure, and the liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S). The study also found that elevated temperature and prolonged reaction duration favored the preferential precipitation of aragonite. Additionally, raising the temperature and the magnesium-tocalcium stoichiometric ratio was shown to enhance the formation of aragonite, affecting its crystal growth orientation and dimensions. The optimal combination of reaction parameters for the preparation of acicular aragonite was found to be the reaction time of 8 h, the magnesium-tocalcium stoichiometric ratio of 0.8, the reaction temperature of 120 °C, and the stirring speed of 200 r·min-1. Under these conditions, the resulting acicular aragonite exhibited excellent overall uniformity, a large aspect ratio, and a smooth crystal surface, with a content of 91.49 %, a single crystal length ranging from 9.86 to 32.6 µm, and a diameter ranging from 0.63 to 2.15 µm. This study provides valuable insights into the efficient production of acicular aragonite from steel slag while reducing CO2 emissions and promoting the sustainable use of resources.

RESUMEN

Polypropylene (PP) has gained attention in the industry as an environmentally friendly material. However, its electrical properties are compromised due to space charge accumulation during operation, limiting its application in high-voltage DC cable insulation. This study investigates the effect and mechanism of SiO2 with a DDS surface hydrophobic treatment on space charge suppression and the electrical properties of PP composites. The PP matrix was doped with SiO2 nanostructures, both with a DDS surface hydrophobic treatment and untreated as a control group. The functional group structure and dispersion of nanostructured SiO2 in the matrix were characterized. The findings reveal that the incorporation of SiO2 nanostructures effectively mitigates charge accumulation in PP composites. However, a high concentration of unsurfaced nanostructures tends to agglomerate, resulting in inadequate space charge suppression and a diminished DC breakdown field strength. Nonetheless, surface treatment improves the dispersion of SiO2 within the matrix. Notably, the composite containing 1.0 wt% of surface hydrophobic SiO2 exhibits the least space charge accumulation. Compared to the base material PP, the average charge density is reduced by 83.9% after the 1800 s short-circuit discharges. Moreover, its DC breakdown field strength reaches 3.45 × 108 V/m, surpassing pure PP by 19.4% and untreated SiO2/PP composites of the same proportion by 24.0%.

RESUMEN

The key purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between Greenfield investment and economic growth of Bangladesh using annual time series data during the period 2003-2020. The study employs Toda-Yamamoto (T-Y) tests of Granger causality method that performs Modified Wald Test (MWALD) in order to establish causal relation among different variables. There are three steps in implementing the T-Y procedure. The first step involves using different tests (ADF, PP, and KPSS test) to identify the maximum order of integration of the variable. The second step requires selecting the optimal lag length (p) based on several lag length selection criteria. In the third step, MWALD approach is used for testing the vector auto regression model for causality. The results of the tests (ADF, PP, and KPSS) concluded that the maximum order of integration of the variables is two. Then, the optimal lag length of two (p = 2) has been selected based on several lag length selection criteria. Finally, the findings reveal the evidence of unidirectional causality from Real Greenfield Foreign Direct Investment (RGFDI) to Real Gross Domestic Product (RGDP). The key contribution of this study is to investigate the Greenfield investments-growth relationship for a country like Bangladesh.

RESUMEN

To optimize the extraction process of Chuanxiong Rhizoma-Gastrodiae Rhizoma herb pair by network pharmacology combined with analytic hierarchy process(AHP)-entropy weight method and multi-index orthogonal test. The potential active components and targets of Chuanxiong Rhizoma-Gastrodiae Rhizoma were screened by network pharmacology and molecular docking, and the process evaluation indexes were determined with reference to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2020 edition). The core components of Chuanxiong Rhizoma-Gastrodiae Rhizoma were determined as gastrodin, parishin B, parishin C, parishin E, ferulic acid, and 3-butylphthalide. With the extraction volume of each indicator and yield of dry extract as comprehensive evaluation indicators, the extraction conditions were optimized by the AHP-entropy weight method and orthogonal test as the ethanol volume of 50%, the solid-liquid ratio of 1∶8(g·mL~(-1)), extraction for three times, and 1.5 h each time. Through network pharmacology and molecular docking, the process evaluation index was determined, and the optimized process was stable and reproducible for the extraction of Chuanxiong Rhizoma-Gastrodiae Rhizoma herb pair, which could provide reference for in-depth research.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application of 3D printing percutaneous surgical guide plate in closed reduction and cannulated screw internal fixation of femoral neck fracture. METHODS: The clinical data of 12 patients with femoral neck fracture from March 2019 to March 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into observation group and control group according to different operation plans, with 6 cases in each group. The observation group received percutaneous operation guide plate assisted closed reduction and hollow screw internal fixation, while the control group received closed reduction and hollow compression screw internal fixation. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, fluoroscopy times, and Kirschner needle puncture times were compared between two groups. The location of screws were recordedon postoperative X-ray films, follow-up time, time of complete fracture healing, Harris score of hip joint and the incidence of complications were recorded on postoperative X-ray films. RESULTS: The operation time of observation group (32.17±6.18) min was shorter than that of control group (53.83±7.31) min (P<0.05). The amount of intraoperative bleeding in the observation group (18.33±2.94) ml was less than that in the control group (38.17±5.56) ml(P<0.05). The times of fluoroscopy in the observation group (7.50±1.05) were less than those in the control group (21.00±4.82) (P<0.05). The number of Kirschner needle punctures (8.00±0.63) in observation group was less than that in control group (32.67±3.08) (P<0.05). The follow-up time was(12.88±0.74) months in observation group and (12.83±0.72) months in control group, there was no significant difference between two groups (P>0.05). One year after operation, Harris score of hip joint in the observation group was(82.00±4.52) points, while that in the control group was(81.00±3.41) points, there was no significant difference between two groups(P>0.05). The time of complete fracture healing in the observation group was (7.50±1.05) months, while that in the control group was (7.67±1.21) months, there was no significant difference between two groups(P>0.05). The parallelism of the screws in the observation group was (0.50±0.11) ° and (0.76±0.15) °, which were lower than that in the control group (1.57±0.31) ° and (1.87±0.21) ° (P<0.05). The screw distribution area ratio (0.13±0.02) cm2 in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (0.08±0.01) cm2 (P<0.05). No complications such as necrosis of femoral head, nonunion of fracture, shortening of femoral neck and withdrawal of internal fixation occurred in both groups. CONCLUSION: The application of 3D printing percutaneous surgical guide plate improves the accuracy and safety of closed reduction and cannulated screw internal fixation for femoral neck fracture. It has the advantages of minimally invasive, reducing radiation exposure, fast and accurate, shortening the operation time and reducing intraoperative bleeding.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The specific pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. In this study, we examined the expression of differential messenger RNAs (mRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), and long-stranded noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells to initially construct a circRNA/lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA ceRNA regulatory network to explore the pathogenesis of AF and to screen for potential biomarkers. METHODS: A total of four pairs of AF cases and healthy subjects were selected to detect differentially expressed mRNAs, circRNAs, and lncRNAs in peripheral blood mononuclear cells by microarray analysis. And 20 pairs of peripheral blood from AF patients and healthy subjects were selected for validation of mRNA, circRNA, and lncRNA by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR).The relevant ceRNA networks were constructed by GO and KEGG and correlation analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that compared with healthy subjects, there were 813 differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs) in peripheral blood monocytes of AF, including 445 upregulated genes and 368 downregulated genes, 120 differentially expressed circRNAs (DEcircRNAs), including 65 upregulated and 55 downregulated, 912 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), including 531 upregulated and 381 downregulated lncRNAs. GO and KEGG analysis of DERNA revealed the biological processes and pathways involved in AF. Based on microarray data and predicted miRNAs, a ceRNA network containing 34 mRNAs, 212 circRNAs, 108 lncRNAs, and 38 miRNAs was constructed. CONCLUSION: We revealed a novel ceRNA network in AF and showed that downregulated XIST, circRNA_2773, and CADM1 were negatively correlated with miR-486-5p expression and had a potential targeting relationship with miR-486-5p.

RESUMEN

Polar group-modified crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) materials are developed with a peroxide thermochemical method of individually grafting chloroacetic acid allyl ester (CAAE) and maleic anhydride (MAH) to polyethylene molecular-chains, which are dedicated to ameliorating dielectric characteristics through charge-trapping mechanism. By free radical addition reactions, the CAAE and MAH molecules are successfully grafted to polyethylene molecular chains of XLPE in crosslinking process, as verified by infrared spectroscopy molecular characterizations. Dielectric spectra, electric conductance, and dielectric breakdown strength are tested to evaluate the improved dielectric performances. Charge trap characteristics are investigated by analyzing thermal stimulation depolarization currents in combination with first-principles electronic-structure calculations to reveal the polar-group introduced mechanisms of contributing dipole dielectric polarization, impeding electric conduction, and promoting electrical breakdown field. The grafted polar-group molecules, especially for MAH, can introduce deep-level charge traps in XLPE materials to effectively restrict charge injections and hinder charge carrier transports, which accounts for the significant improvements in electric resistance and dielectric breakdown strength.

RESUMEN

Reed straw and electric furnace dust (EFD) waste were used to prepare magnetic Fe-C composite (EFD&C) by co-precipitation and high-temperature activation method to remove Cr(VI) from water. The magnetic EFD&C owned a large specific surface (536.61 m2/g) and a porous structure (micropores and mesopores), and had an efficient removal capacity for Cr(VI). Under conditions of pH (2), the addition amount of EFD&C (1 g/L), the adsorption time (760 min), and the temperature (45 °C), the maximum adsorption capacity reached 111.94 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism mainly attributed to chemical adsorption (redox), Cr(VI) reduced to Cr(III) by Fe(II) and Fe(0) (from Fe3O4 and Fe components in EFD) and surface functional groups of -OH, C = C, C-C and O-C = O (from biochar), and secondary attributed to physical adsorption, Cr(VI) and Cr(III) (from reduced Cr(VI)) adsorbed into the porous structure of EFD&C. This study provided a feasible solution for the preparation of adsorbents for adsorbing heavy metals from iron-containing metallurgical solid waste and biomass waste, which contributed to reducing the environmental pollution and lowering the cost of adsorbent preparation.

RESUMEN

Objective:To explore the quality of life (QOL) and the related influencing factors of patients with early esophageal cancer after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).Methods:A questionnaire survey was conducted in 167 early esophageal cancer patients who underwent ESD in Shanxi Province Cancer Hospital from January 2022 to July 2022. European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Assessment Core Scale (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the Esophageal Cancer Supplementary Scale (EORTC QLQ-OES18) were used to compare QOL of patients with different clinical characteristics before surgery, 1 month after surgery and 6 months after surgery, And multiple logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of patients' QOL at 6 months after surgery. Results:EORTC QLQ-C30 showed that the scores of the patients' physical function, role function, and social function at 1 month and 6 months after surgery were lower than those before surgery, and the differences were statistically significant (all P < 0.05). The scores of dyspnea, constipation, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, and economic status in the symptom area were higher than those before surgery, and the differences were statistically significant (all P < 0.05). According to EORTC QLQ-OES18, the scores of difficulty in swallowing oral fluid, obstruction, poor eating initiative, dry mouth, and cough at 1 month and 6 months after surgery were higher than those before surgery, and the differences were statistically significant (all P < 0.05). The score of dysphagia at 1 month after surgery was higher than that before surgery, while the score at 6 months after surgery was lower than that before surgery, and the differences were statistically significant (all P < 0.05). The score of dyspepsia at 1 month and 6 months after surgery was lower than that before surgery, and the difference was statistically significant (all P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that the lesion perimeter >1/2 perimeter (lesion perimeter >1/2 perimeter vs. lesion perimeter ≤ 1/2 perimeter: OR = 2.072, 95% CI 1.536-2.796, P < 0.05) and postoperative esophageal stricture dilatation (undergoing esophageal stricture dilatation or not: OR = 2.193, 95% CI 1.429-2.789, P < 0.05) were independent risk factors affecting the QOL of patients at 6 months after surgery. Conclusions:The QOL of early esophageal cancer patients after ESD is decreased compared with that before surgery, and the main manifestations include physical function, role function, social function, and symptom. The area of lesion and undergoing esophageal stricture dilatation or not are factors affecting the QOL of patients after surgery.

RESUMEN

Radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) is considered as an imaging marker of the prodromal stage of multiple sclerosis (MS), and approximately one-third of patients might convert to clinically isolated syndrome or clinically definite multiple sclerosis within 5 years after diagnosis. Although it still remains inconclusive whether or not disease-modifying therapies for RIS need to be initiated, effective identification of prognostic factors for conversion would be of great benefit for early screening of high-risk patients and subsequent clinical precision management. Combined with the latest research progress at home and abroad, this review summarizes the prognostic factors for conversion of RIS to MS from the aspects of demographic characteristics, clinical presentations, imaging manifestations, cerebrospinal fluid and ophthalmological examinations. Given that disease-modifying therapies for RIS are still in clinical research stage and there are no definite recommendations to date, this article expounds the research progress on clinical monitoring, therapeutics and prevention of disease progression, which aims to provide neurologists with reference suggestions on clinical management of RIS.

RESUMEN

Objective:To explore the feasibility of MRI to assist the early diagnosis of midfoot tendon and ligament injuries.Methods:Fifty-two patients with midfoot ligament and tendon injuries who visited Beijing Jishuitan Hospital from September 2016 to December 2021 were enrolled in the study, and 20 healthy volunteers were recruited as controls. All participants underwent mid foot coronal (short axis), sagittal, and axial (long axis) MRI T1 weighted imaging and proton fat suppression sequence examination. The MRI images were evaluated by 2 senior radiologists independently. Results:The consistency of the two radiologists in diagnosis of tendons, ligaments, bones, and soft tissues were good ( κ=0.916, 0.896, and 0.893, respectively). The tendons and ligaments of the midfoot in 20 healthy volunteers (40 feet) showed uniform bands of varying thickness with slightly low signal intensity; the anterior tibial tendon showed a thin line shape, the posterior tibial tendon showed a slightly thick band with uniform low signal intensity, and the calcaneonavicular ligament showed a thin line-like low signal intensity running in different directions. In 52 patients with midfoot tendon and ligament injuries, 18 had anterior tibial tendon injuries, 20 had posterior tibial tendon injuries, and 14 had calcaneonavicular ligament injuries. The injured tendon or ligament was characterized by uneven thickness, blurred edges, and continuous interruption on T1WI sequence, uneven enhancement of signal in the tendon or ligament running area on PD-FS sequence, accumulation of fluid in the tendon sheath, and partial tearing. The partial tear showed discontinuity and thickening of tendons, while the complete tear showed that the tendons were interrupted and retracted, the fiber structure disappeared and was filled with liquid, and the surrounding soft tissue edema was present. Conclusion:MRI can clearly display the course and anatomical structure of the attachment end of the midfoot tendon and ligament, which may assist in early diagnosis of midfoot tendon and ligament injuries.
